2010 year in review

January - Exciting for me as I got a new job! I started on the 19th. Hubby to Toronto for meetings. My car in the shop with a not so cheap repair. And we mourn the loss of a (very) loved one.

February - New owners to the house that we rent an apartment in, but they didn't kick us out. People who lived upstairs (and who were insanely inconsistent with the heat) moved out. New owner moved in, and minus some extra noise from renos, all in all, not too bad. We also decided we were ready to start house shopping. My sister and her family visited us. Finally got $$ back from the Province from damage to my car on the 401 last August.

March - Lots, and lots of houses were looked at... All the ones in town were too expensive for what you get, so we started looking further out. Not much else exciting happened. We found the house we like! First offer basically rejected, so we offered more than we were hoping to have to pay, but still a good price and a good value.

April - Offer accepted, money arranged, house inspection done, gave notice to landlord... everything ready. Now begins the packing! Went to Sudbury for Easter, cousin's daughter's baptism. Some more car repairs, not too bad this time. Boo (kitty) got spayed, no more "Goopy Boo!"

May - Didn't actually do any packing in April, started this month. At least 1/3 of our stuff was still packed from the move last October. Hubby in Toronto again for meetings. Later in the month we took possession of the house, scrubbing and cleaning, ripping out carpets, and a week later we moved in! Got help from my brother and two guys from the church. Took about 4 hours to load/travel/unload, not too shabby! Went to Sudbury for Mother's Day - 'little' bro was in town too!

June - house set up, yard work, more house set up, more yard work. Fun! Got new hours at work, so I no longer work Mondays.

July - pretty much settled in and just living. My (not so new anymore) job going great. Hubby gets a raise! Spent a day at the beach with yet another sister and her boys.

August - just living... My sister from another province visited us, twice! AWESOME. We started a puzzle while she was here, which started my puzzle-a-holic-ness. Also spent a day boating with another sister and her family. I actually went knee-boarding too!

September - Went to Sudbury for our good friends' 10th anniversary vow renewal ceremony, was nice! Hubby in Toronto for meetings. This time I went with him and visited my sis and family, and some friends. Good time. I started teaching Sunday School at church. Sad that an Uncle passed away.

October - Our good friend got married on Thanksgiving. Visited my brother and his family. Furnace guy came to clean/service our 40 year old boiler... almost shut us down for good, but thankfully he got CO emissions back down, and we're good for (hopefully) another year. Hubby's got benefits now, so to the dentist we both go.

November - Hubby super busy with work. Levi (our almost 13 year old cat) died near the end of the month, still miss him. To take my mind off it I decorated and put up our Christmas tree - the earliest ever (too early!)

December - Busy with Christmas parties, extra activities and the like. Got a new kitten, she's cute, cuddly and crazy! Both of us had time off at the end of the month, lots of visiting of family here and there. Oh, and we may FINALLY have a family doctor.

All in all, a good year! Looking forward to 2011, and hopefully not so busy! House renos... here we come!

the early birthday present

Yesterday I went shopping for a birthday present for my husband. I found exactly what I was looking for, an electric fireplace, and it was on sale! But there is only one left. Its on the highest shelf possible in the most inconvenient spot (talk about planning...) This older guy is helping, but the box, which is about 60 lbs, has a little label that says team lift. He goes and gets a 'young' guy and a ladder. The ladder is way to short, doesn't even reach the shelf, but still they are struggling to grab hold of the box. Finally they get a taller ladder, the old guy gets another young guy.
Now these two young guys are up there. Oh boy... I said to them that it didn't look very safe, and they probably shouldn't do it. I thought of looking away, but I needed to see in case the whole thing came crashing down on me. They manage to get it off the shelf, partly, then it slips and crashes onto the top of the ladder where the box cracks and snags on the edge of the ladder. By now there is another customer watching, she wants that fireplace.
One guy is trying to lift the box but the rips keep getting bigger, then I hear the scratch, yes, they scratched the fireplace. After some more comical wrestling, the three of them (the old guy is helping again) finally and roughly get the box to the ground. We inspect the box and the scratch, the other lady hovering to see if I still want it, quite annoying actually. There was a small scratch on the back side, I bought it anyway. They load it on the top of my cart. This took about 25 minutes.
I wheel to the cash, which was an adventure in itself - people when you see a cart with a big box coming down the aisle, don't cut it off, don't stop in front of it, and please oh please, if your yapping on the phone and get hit cause your in your own little world, don't gripe about it afterwards.
Whew, out of the store now, I get to my car. Okay, how to get this 60lb awkward thing into my car by myself. Gravity and momentum. It slid right in the back seat in about 1.5 minutes. Makes me wonder about those two guys on the ladder.
I get home. Can't get it out of my car. Why could I get it in but not out? I didn't want my husband to have to help me unload his own present so I ask my Dad. Now it ends up by the front door. How to get it inside without it being seen? There's no way... So after all that, he got his present last night, even though his birthday is two weeks away...
Whew!

the fall

So I feel I should be carrying on with the story and latest of last week's events, that will come. But first I must tell you about my silly fall.
We had quite the snowstorm overnight Saturday to Sunday. Sunday I went out on our deck (its 8 steps up from the ground). It was covered in snow, pretty deep. The shovel was not on the deck, I needed to go get it.
This started my trek down the snow covered steps. Well, underneath that snow was a nice slick layer of ice, conveniently hidden so I couldn't even tell it was there!
My foot slid out, down I went... I fell almost on my tailbone, but more off to the one side. I tried to grab the railing with my left arm, but it was already too late.
There I went, bouncing on my bottom, all the way down the stairs! It was actually quite funny. Lucky for the snow, it cushioned the landing. I also seem to have some "natural" extra padding built right in!
Yes, funny, mainly because no one saw, and because at that point nothing hurt. I got up... Got the shovels, and we (by this time the hubby was outside) shoveled. Yes, funny, until later that night when things started to ache... Was it the fall (still hadn't told the hubby about that) or was it the shoveling?
Yes, funny, until the next morning... I could not move. The slightest move or touch (hubby *gently* shaking me awake) was excruciating! My whole left side... Ouch...
Yes, funny again, because I am feeling a lot better... (Though holding my arms up to type seems to tire me out!)

Whoosh!

I was pretty groggy this morning, late to bed last night, hit snooze twice (have time only to hit it once), and so I was rushing around a little. I took the quickest shower that I remember taking for years (its okay, I really am clean). I was still in a hurry, because timing it tight in the morning, and now my lateness will also affect Jeff. I toweled off while exiting the bathroom, like I said, in a hurry; normally I lollygag awhile...
I open the bathroom door to hear and see something, WHOOSH!
I almost freaked right out, and yelled “Oh Crap!” Jeff is almost wide awake now… So he asks, what is wrong? (A little crabby, it’s first thing in the morning and the crazy lady is yelling…) So, what was the whoosh? The best ‘person’ to ask would be our fun loving little angel of a cat, Buddy… What did Buddy do? She brought a friend into the house… JOY!
This is what went whoosh:
Well, not EXACTLY this bird, but one very much like it…
Birds in the house were a pretty common thing when we lived in the city (again, ask Buddy) so we got pretty good at catching them. This little guy was flying all over Jeff’s office, finally we cornered him and Jeff got him in a towel. He is now free!

Please note: No animals were intentionally harmed (by humans) for the making of this story.

Get Rich Quick??

So lately I have been trying to come up with some 'get rich quick' schemes. Well that's really not accurate, its more of a 'get enough to get by comfortably in a reasonable amount of time' scheme - essentially, make more money and hopefully while doing something you enjoy.

But what happens when you enjoy your work and maybe the money just doesn't seem to be enough? Now I am not talking about being greedy and taking more than my fair share, that's just all I want - my fair share.

But this isn't really about me, because I am starting to feel like I can actually have both, and for ONCE without having to quit my job! On the other hand, I will say again, this isn't really about me, more my husband. So, my question is - what do I do to help him?
